WHY ALL THE FUSS ABOUT FLU AND FLU REMEDIES?
“Don’t overreact, but don’t underestimate,” says Dr. Larry Brilliant in an interview on PBS.
Brilliant is an expert on pandemics* and heads a website called Skoll Global Threats. Here is what he has to say about future pandemics, based on the 2009 H1N1 swine flu:
“While the virus was identified relatively quickly, a vaccine was slow in coming and governments were moderately effective in coordinating their responses. The media, while at times alarmist, generally did a good job in keeping people informed. But the H1N1 episode made it clear we need to put into place better processes to be able to move more quickly when the next pandemic strikes.”
As Brilliant observes: “We’re in this together.” It’s time to wake up to the very real threat of pandemics.
While Dr. Brilliant relies heavily on surveillance of circulating flu viruses and on the development of a vaccine and antivirals in the eventuality of a novel flu virus (one that has never before been experienced by humans), the reality is that there will be a rather large time gap before conventional medicine has anything to offer as the new virus takes hold at a global level.
The viruses change every year (called a drift), but from time to time, as with epidemics, the viruses can completely change (called a shift) by exchanging genetic material with animals, creating a new virus that has never before been encountered by humans. Which means that there will be no immunity within the human population and millions of people will be exposed. Depending on individual susceptibility, many will get sick with the flu. (Just watch the movie Contagion and you will get a good idea of what happens in a pandemic situation.)
WHY ALL MY FUSS ABOUT FLU AND FLU REMEDIES?
While Dr. Brilliant and the conventional medical world are scrambling to create ‘the’ vaccine to deal with the pandemic, I would echo his statement, “We’re in this together.” From my perspective, that means we can learn how to use homeopathic remedies to prevent and help heal loved ones who might get the flu in the event of a pandemic, whether it originates from pigs (swine) or birds (avian).
My belief in life is that there is ALWAYS something you can do in any given situation. You just have to figure out what it is…with grit, determination, and perseverance. When I first learned about homeopathy, I realized very quickly that this was a healing modality that made sense to me. The more I learned, the more I have come to understand how very true homeopathy is in every aspect of prevention and healing of the sick.
You are the first responders in a flu epidemic and/or pandemic, whether you are vaccinated for seasonal flu or not. A seasonal flu vaccine will confer no immunity when it is a novel virus circulating. We really are in this particular infectious illness together, the vaccine free and the vaccinated…no herd immunity, no nothing…except for those of you who have your handy flu kit with remedies and materia medica.
So, in the event of a pandemic, there IS something you can do. Here is your first remedy PLUS a handout that helps you sort out what to pay attention to in terms of flu symptoms—those that are common to everyone with the flu and, in contrast, what is characteristic about your child’s flu symptoms.
Casey and I will soon have a Facebook page set up where you can ask any questions you have about flu or fever. Or you can use the Facebook page to share your remedy successes with other parents. Watch for it soon!
*A pandemic can be defined as “an epidemic occurring worldwide or over a very wide area, crossing international boundaries, and usually affecting a large number of people.”[1]
The World Health Organization (WHO) has a six-stage classification that describes the process by which a novel influenza virus moves from the first few infections in humans through to a pandemic. This starts with the virus mostly infecting animals, with a few cases where animals infect people, then moves through the stage where the virus begins to spread directly between people and ends with a pandemic when infections from the new virus have spread worldwide.[2]
A disease or condition is not a pandemic merely because it is widespread or kills many people; it must also be infectious.[3]
