Parenthood and sick kids…nothing can prepare anyone for the job! Exhilaration and exhaustion, and usually, both at the same time and for extended periods of time! Then add to the mix an insatiable curiosity to figure out why the croup, the cough, the ear infections, and soon, the exploration of the vaccine connection. Could it be possible?
I was part of a group of parents looking for answers 30 years ago, and this kind of inquiry was very much underground with very little information available. The whole topic was difficult to research unless you knew who to talk to…very covert!
FAST-FORWARD 30 YEARS
Today? With the Internet and 30 years of parents sharing, you have an explosion of information about whether to vaccinate or not. A simple Google search—and wham! Overwhelm! Too much information.
The dilemma now is not how to find information about whether to vaccinate or not, but how to sort through ALL the information! Who has that kind of time?
And if you do decide not to vaccinate, then what do you do if your child does get sick with whooping cough, influenza, mumps, measles, rubella, or chicken pox? Or worse yet, with all the news about secondary bacterial infections like meningitis and HiB, where do you as a parent turn for help? Especially if you are a parent who has decided to be vaccine free—or even if you started vaccinating, only to find that your child had an adverse reaction and cannot receive any more vaccines.
